SUBJECT: PowerSchool Cybersecurity Incident
DATE: 1/21/2025
Dear Tulelake Basin Joint Unified School District Family:
We are writing to make you aware of a recent cybersecurity incident involving PowerSchool, a software
vendor which formerly provided our Student Information System (SIS).
On Tuesday, January 7, 2025, PowerSchool informed our leadership team that they experienced a
cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized access to certain PowerSchool SIS customer data.
Unfortunately, they have confirmed that the information belongs to some of Tulelake Basin Joint
Unified School District’s families and educators. This data breach occurred through PowerSchool
corporate systems and impacts district’s nationwide. Tulelake Basin Joint Unified School District was
not targeted specifically.
PowerSchool informed us that the data primarily includes parent and student contact information with
data elements such as name and address information. Across their customer base, they have
determined that for a portion of individuals, some personally identifiable information (PII) was
impacted. They are working with urgency to complete their investigation and determine whether PII
belonging to our students was included.
We moved from PowerSchool to Aeries as our SIS provider last year but had to leave the PowerSchool
database up while the conversion was verified. Moving forward the database will no longer be
accessible.
Protecting our students is a very serious matter to Tulelake Basin Joint Unified School District. With
PowerSchool’s help, more information and resources will be provided as soon as they become
available.
Sincerely,
Tulelake Basin Joint Unified School District
